http://ims.missouri.edu/usims/step2.data/matec.asp The Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center (MATEC) is based at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the Jane Addams College of Social Work. The center provides training and information services in a seven-state region (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin). Its mission is to increase the number of health care providers who are effectively educated and motivated to prevent, diagnose, treat and manage HIV infection. Objective To establish an Internet geographic information system for visualizing MATEC data to facilitate the assessment of training and educational activities in the context of the HIV care environment in the MATEC 7-state region This information system provides users with a suite of tools to interact with geographic data and conduct spatial analyses related to the HIV-related services in the MATEC region. An Internet GIS, developed using ESRI’s Arc Internet Map Server (Arc IMS), allows users to: (1) geographically visualize information via the Internet; (2) Assess the relationship between the distribution of HIV services and spatially referenced socio-economic data; and (3) generate “what if” scenarios” that may direct the allocation of healthcare resources. Through this collaboration we are able to powerfully demonstrate and in turn, assess the MATEC reach throughout the region and to strategically target areas in need of HIV/AIDS training intervention. Method The project includes overlaying MATEC program data ( types of training programs, location, topics, disciplines and practice patterns of trainees), with relevant governmental data sources such as HRSA funded health service sites including BPHC and HAB funded programs, census data , HIV prevalence and poverty level data.
